What Gamma-Ray Deexcitation Lines Reveal about Solar Flares
نویسنده
چکیده
Gamma-ray emission from solar flares reveals information about the nature of the accelerated particles and about the physical conditions of the medium through which the accelerated particles are transported. In this paper, we present the gamma-ray line production and loop transport models used in our calculations of highenergy emission. We discuss the calculated interaction time history, the depth distribution, the interacting-particle angular distribution, and fluence ratios of the narrow gamma-ray lines. We show the relationship between the γray observables and the parameters of the transport and line-production models. For illustration, we use calculations of 4.44 MeV C nuclear deexcitation line production. Applications of the calculations to flare observations by both SMM and RHESSI are also presented.

OVERVIEW Electromagnetic radiation extends over a very broad range of wavelengths, from gamma rays at the shortest wavelengths to radio waves at the long-wavelength end of the spectrum. In terms of photon energies, gamma rays are at the high end of the spectrum, starting at a few tenths of an MeV. This unit of energy (1 MeV=1.6×10 −13 joule) is used throughout this article. In solar flares, as ...
متن کاملMeasurement of Accelerated Particles at the Sun
Solar γ-ray lines and continua provide information on flare-accelerated particles that interact at the Sun. We primarily discuss observations of flare spectra made by the OSSE experiment on CGRO and the gamma-ray spectrometer on SMM. Continuum γ-ray spectra reflect the MeV electron population. These spectra show various shapes above 0.1 MeV: single power laws, broken power-laws (both hardening ...
متن کاملLow Energy Cosmic Ray Interactions in Astrophysics
Gamma ray emission lines resulting from accelerated particle bombardment of ambient gas can serve as an important spectroscopic tool for abundance determinations. The method is illustrated by considering the gamma ray line emission observed from solar flares. The observation of similar gamma ray lines from Orion suggests the existence of large fluxes of low energy Galactic cosmic rays. The role...
متن کاملGamma-Ray Polarimetry of Two X-Class Solar Flares
We have performed the first polarimetry of solar flare emission at γ-ray energies (0.2–1MeV). These observations were performed with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) for two large flares: the GOES X4.8-class solar flare of 2002 July 23, and the X17-class flare of 2003 October 28. We have marginal polarization detections in both flares, at levels of 21 ± 9% and -...
متن کاملNuclear cross sections for gamma ray deexcitation line production by secondary neutrons in the Earth’s atmosphere
[1] Interactions of galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles with nuclei in the Earth’s atmosphere produce secondary neutrons. Secondary neutrons with energies greater than a few MeV interact with atmospheric nuclei and produce gamma ray lines. The relative intensities of these lines depend on the shape of the neutron energy spectrum, and so their measurement with satellite detectors ...
